Learn How to Optimize Your Job Search Using LinkedIn

why should I use Linkedin if I don't like social media

As a career coach, I've spoken with many clients who are skeptical of using LinkedIn saying they dislike social media. However, LinkedIn is a professional platform, unlike Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. It's a site to connect with recruiters, hiring managers, and others in your field of interest. By joining professional groups, you can access job listings, network with like-minded professionals, and stay updated on industry trends, reinforcing the value of LinkedIn in your job search.

Professional Networking

The adage' it's who you know' goes a long way in your job search. It only takes connecting with one person to put you in front of the hiring manager for an interview. In addition, you can reach out to people working at places you are interested in to get a sense of the company culture.

Networking plays a crucial role in job searches, since 85% of roles are not publicly posted. It's essential to remember that recruiters usually check your profile before looking at your resume, and all employers will search for it when you apply for positions.

Job Postings

Most companies publish job openings on LinkedIn. The platform uses algorithms to suggest job listings that align with your profile, while also allowing recruiters and hiring managers to discover your profile.

Create your Personal Brand

A well-crafted profile increases your visibility and makes it easier for recruiters to find you, mainly if you've used relevant keywords. Your profile serves as a digital resume and personal branding statement, highlighting your skills, experiences, and accomplishments.

Furthermore, you have the option to upload presentations, list foreign languages, and certifications. Also, endorsements from supervisors, colleagues, or clients can enhance the credibility of your profile by highlighting your professional attitude.

Get Industry Insights

LinkedIn provides access to industry news, trends, and discussions through posts, articles, and groups. Staying informed can help you understand what skills are in demand and how to position yourself effectively. You can follow companies you're interested in, learn about their culture, and stay updated on their news and job openings, which can help you tailor your resume and prepare for interviews.

Pro Tips

  • Only connect with people you know. Quality is more important than quantity.

  • Change the default LinkedIn URL to delete the digits after your name.

  • Always send a personalized message when you send a connection request. For example, you can mention how you know the person or why you're interested in connecting.

  • Personalize your About (summary) section in a narrative voice using personal pronouns. This is your chance to tell your story and make a lasting impression.

  • Upload a professional headshot (a good cell phone photo is fine) without a distracting background because some employers will only view profiles with pictures.

Keep in mind that recruiters search profiles daily in search of suitable candidates. Tailor your profile to reflect your career aspirations.
